Today we celebrate the memorial of St. Barnabas. Barnabas was a companion and supporter of St.
Paul. His name means – the son of
encouragement. He truly is an ideal
disciple. He was faithful, joyful and
strong. Filled with the Holy Spirit and
faith he vouched for Paul when they entered Jerusalem and truly embodied Jesus’
call to follow in faith and hope. It was
in his community in Antioch that the name “Christian” was first used. As we journey this day may we take some time
to pray to St. Barnabas for the encouragement that we need to continue to
respond in faith, hope and love!
